Industry - Process Plant Technology and Instrument & Electrical Technology
Students completing these programs can be employed by processing companies such as Conoco, Par 66, Exxon. They are our highest paid graduates with starting wages at $70,000-80,000 per year and after completing a year or two on the job can easily move up into the $100,000 range. The Process Plant degree uses various scientific disciplines to teach students how to take raw materials and turn them into something usable. The Instrument & Electrical degree builds an individual’s knowledge on basic electrical systems, programmable logic controllers and skill sets to inspect, operate and repair instrumentation systems.
Transportation (automotive trades)
Auto Collision Repair & Refinishing: City College is the only college in the state and region to offer this program. Students can complete a full two-year degree that covers the body work and painting or they can also choose to complete just one year and earn a certificate in either the body work or in the painting. Our graduates have jobs waiting for them, with many doing internships while attending classes.
We also offer the mechanical to transportation: Automotive technology and Diesel technology. In both programs, students can exit with a one year certificate or a two year associate degree. MSU Billings and City College will host Fast Pass registration sessions for incoming Fall 2025 freshman starting in late Spring through August. During these registration sessions students will learn how to access their electronic records, visit about their financial aid status, learn key next steps in preparing for college and work with advisors in developing a plan of study and registering for their fall courses. A two-day orientation will be held towards the end of summer to help get students oriented to both campuses; learning about key student and academic support services and how to get involved on campus and in our community.

Highlights

  • City College at Montana State University Billings is in the 2nd year of a five-year, $1.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration Nursing Expansion Program to diversify and expand the nursing workforce in rural Montana. We have been able to remodel our lab space, creating additional simulators for students to work on and allowing us to take additional students into both the practical nursing and registered nursing programs. By the end of the grant period, the LPN program will increase from 15 students to 22 per year while the RN program will increase from 40 students to 56 per year.
  • City College continues to be the only Radiologic Technology program in the state to accredited through the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). https://www.msubillings.edu/citycollege/programs/ProgRadTech.htm
  • The ATTACK Digital Fire Training System simulates fire and smoke, allowing City College’s Fire Science students to train in fire suppression in any location, including those in which live fire is not possible. Students learn firefighting fundamentals in simulated scenarios in a safe environment.
  • The Anatomage Table is a 3D anatomy and virtual dissection tool used by the Anatomy and Physiology instructor to teach human anatomy. The table offers four digitally reconstructed cadavers, 40 high-resolution anatomy cases, and more than 1,600 case studies from which students can learn.
  • Through our Perkins grant City College has been able to purchase some very unique high-tech equipment/simulators for our students to use. These include the Anatomage Table, Zspace and ATTACK digital fire training system:
  • We are excited to partner with MT Tech/Highlands in offering a CNA program, funded by a MT Future at Work Grant. This will expand opportunities for students in the Billings area to achieve a CNA licensure along with college credits.
  • We are happy to say we are taking in our 2nd cohort into the online Sprint Paramedic program this fall. This allows individuals to do all of their lecture and clinicals at a distance with some limited on campus lab/testing days during their three core semesters.
  • We encourage students and families to come visit City College. This past summer we have gone through some substantial remodeling/updating in the Tech building in key student areas and offices.
  • zSpace is an augmented and virtual reality learning platform used by City College’s Automotive and Diesel Programs. The Automotive VR Training modules allow students to practice the assembly and disassembly of an electric vehicle and explore vehicle systems, such as the engine, suspension, transmission, and brakes in a virtual mechanic’s shop.

Important Things To Know

  • Many of our industry and transportation programs do require students to purchase tools – lists are available on our website along with vendors (many of whom give discounts to college students).
  • Many of the transportation and Industry programs have limited spots each year, students are encouraged to apply early and also register for the fall as early as allowed to ensure a spot.
  • Students interested in any of the clinical healthcare programs are encouraged to review that program’s website to become familiar with the competitive application process to enter the program. Please note that all of our clinical healthcare programs utilize a competitive application process.
  • The general scholarship application for the 2024-2025 academic year opens on December 1st.
