Fire and Emergency Services
The Fire and Emergency Services program is designed to prepare graduates for entry into the challenging and competitive field of fire and emergency services. The program is a unique combination of a well-rounded general education core and hand-on firefighting classes leading to professional certification. The required classes in the program are also aligned with the per-requisites for many Paramedic programs.
Pre-Pharmacy
A pharmacist is a health professional who, in addition to dispensing prescription medication to patients, also provides information about the drugs their doctors have ordered for them. They explain physicians' instructions to patients so these individuals can use these medications safely and effectively. This degree program is specifically designed for students seeking admissions into the Skaggs School of Pharmacy at the University of Montana–Missoula. Upon completion of this degree, students desiring a professional (Pharm. D.) degree in Pharmacy Practice or Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences are eligible to apply for admissions into UM-Missoula’s Skaggs School of Pharmacy.
Nursing
Helena College's Nursing Programs prepare graduates to become skilled providers in various health care environments. With an outstanding curriculum, dedicated faculty, and job placement rates, these programs have become highly competitive with 20 new students admitted each semester in the Associate of Science in Registered Nursing program and 16 new students each year in the Practical Nursing Certificate of Applied Science program.
Accounting and Business Technology
The business track emphasizes general business courses to provide students with a broad background for the business environment. The Small Business Entrepreneurship Certificate of Applied Science features courses in entrepreneurship, accounting, computer applications, and general education. The Associate of Applied Science – Small Business Management Technology degree further offers management, marketing, ethics, and finance courses. The two options will provide educational opportunities for students to develop the necessary skills to manage their own business.
Cosmetology
The Cosmetology program will prepare students in both theory and practical application to obtain the Montana Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists Cosmetology Licensure Examination upon completion of the program. In addition, students who successfully complete the program will earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Cosmetology degree. The program is designed to prepare students for employment in all areas of the Cosmetology field, including hair cutting, hair coloring, hair styling, makeup application, nails, and esthetics.
The curriculum is guided by the Montana State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists license requirements and is reviewed by an advisory board composed of local and regional industry members.
Industrial Welding and Fabrication
Extensive hands on experience will enable you to obtain employment in a wide spectrum of areas with high earning potential. Our Industrial Welding and Metal Fabrication degree program has been designed to provide you with a state of the art education in a shop filled with industry standard equipment.
Diesel Technology
Diesel Technology prepares students to enter various segments of the diesel repair industry as an entry-level technician. This includes, but is not limited to agricultural, industrial equipment and the heavy-duty diesel truck repair industry. This program provides comprehensive training in maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of related electrical/electronic systems, mobile hydraulic systems, manual and hydraulic drive trains, brakes, air systems, diesel engines, general maintenance, alignment and undercarriages, and HVAC as used in equipment common to the diesel repair industry. After graduating, you will be well prepared for a career as a diesel technician. Major placement areas for the Diesel Technology graduate are agriculture and truck dealerships, truck fleets, construction, mining, oil exploration companies, farms and ranches, and independent truck repair shop
CNC Machining
CNC Machining A.A.S. is designed to prepare students as entry-level machinists. Students will study machining processes and procedures using lathes, mills, and precision grinders. Students will be prepared to enter the work force as entry-level CNC operators, CNC programmers, CAD/CAM technicians, and manual machinists. Students will be prepared for machining jobs in many areas including transportation, energy industry, aerospace, job shop, and tool and die making.
Aviation Maintenance Technology
Are you detail oriented? Do you enjoy understanding how machines work? A career in Aviation Maintenance could be what you are looking for. It is a great responsibility to keep airplanes in a safe condition to fly.
Our hangar sits at the edge of the Helena Regional Airport and our instructors provide quality, meaningful instruction – both hands-on and in the classroom. Successful completion of the program prepares and qualifies students for the Federal Aviation Administration’s tests to obtain an Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic license. With this training, a technician will be prepared for employment in many different occupations in the aviation industry including: fixed base operations, repair stations, commuter airlines, air cargo, aircraft restoration, flight schools and aerial firefighting, to name a few.
Complete program and go right into a career as an aviation maintenance technician or use your degree as a stepping stone to a career in aerospace engineering.
Automotive Technology
Your Associate of Applied Science degree will provide you with the skills to become certified as well as work in any shop with professional skills that will set you apart from the rest. Do you have aspirations of owning your own shop? Let’s build some business courses into your academic plan.
Your two year degree will offer the opportunity to go right into the field of automotive repair. Many students choose to graduate with a Master ASE Certification.
Our curriculum consists of eight areas of study as defined by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
Speaking of current technology. We also offer a certificate in Hybrid Service Technology.
IT and Programming
Today’s IT and Programming jobs pay well and are always in demand.
The program offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Software Development and an Associate of Science degree designed to transfer to a four-year Computer Science degree at UM, MSU, or Montana Tech. A new Associate of Applied Science degree in Cloud DevOps and a new Certificate of Applied Science in IT Help Desk are scheduled to be offered beginning Fall 2023.
Computer programmers and software developers write the software that enables computers to perform useful functions. Programmers take the designs of software engineers and developers and turn them into instructions that the computer can read. The work of a programmer can vary, with different subsets that focus on multiple areas in the computer industry.
In an industry driven by constant progression, our curriculum is evaluated by an advisory council to ensure relevance and student success in the work place.
General Transfer
General Transfer plays a crucial role in preparing students for both academic and career success. Through personalized academic planning, students are guided to meet the prerequisites and requirements of four-year universities, ensuring a smooth transition. Additionally, the department provides career exploration through a first year seminar which equips students with the tools they need to enter the workforce confidently. By fostering strong partnerships with local businesses and universities, the General Transfer Department ensures that students are well-prepared for the next steps in their educational and professional journeys.
