Mining Engineering
The new energy economy needs more mining engineers to design, construct, and manage surface and underground mines around the world. Studying mining engineering at Montana Tech offers coursework on geological materials, blasting, materials handling, mine valuation, ventilation, and designing/operating of surface and underground mines. Students learn in state-of-the-art field and laboratory facilities including the Underground Mine Education Center, the only on-campus underground mine in the nation and have hands-on experiences through coursework, student clubs, and research projects.
Electrical Engineering
The Electrical Engineering program at Montana Tech offers coursework in power grid stability, grid modeling, power protection, and instrumentation and controls that prepares students for in-demand careers in renewable energy, semiconductors, microprocessors, controls, consulting and more. Students learn in state-of-the-art labs dedicated to protection, energy conversion, power plant systems, and training, and benefit from small classes taught by industry-experienced—and connected—faculty who offer mentorship from class to career.
Occupational Safety and Health
Students in the Occupational Safety and Health program at Montana Tech apply science, engineering, and technology to anticipate, evaluate, and control safety and health hazards in the workplace. Students have hands-on experiences in our state-of-the-art safety lab where they participate in real-world safety simulations. Additionally, students learn from experienced faculty and have access to scholarship and professional networking opportunities through the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
Nursing
Montana Tech’s Sherry Lesar School of Nursing is ranked the #1 Nursing Program in Montana (RegisteredNursing.org, 2024). Students learn in the Lesar Family Nursing Simulation Center that includes four simulation suites, a nurse's station, medication room, and high-tech mannequins for simulated learning experiences. Students complete close to 1,000 clinical hours through skills and simulation labs and clinical experiences at area hospitals and clinics. The Nursing Scholars Edge Direct Entry Program (mtech.edu/nursing/scholars-edge) provides 25 Montana high school seniors the opportunity to receive direct admission to the clinical portion of the Sherry Lesar School of Nursing. Applications are due by January 15, 2025.

  • • Housing applications can be completed on your personal (URL) upon acceptance to Montana Tech. We encourage students to apply and submit the $100 deposit for housing as soon as possible (by December preferably). Residence Hall assignments are based in the order housing applications and deposits are received. If you withdraw your application before June 1, you'll receive a refund of the housing deposit.

  • • Our campus overlooks historic Uptown Butte where headframes from the area’s underground mining past decorate the hillsides against the backdrop of 360-degree mountain views. You’ll find outdoor recreation opportunities in every direction and with Butte being Montana’s Festival City, there’s always something to experience.
  • • Our Outdoor Recreation Program has gear rentals available and offers student trips. The Whiskey Gulch Mountain Bike Skills Park on campus links to miles of single and double-track trails.
  • • Our dedicated student-athletes compete in NAIA Frontier Conference sports including: men’s football, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s track & field.
  • • Students participate in 40+ clubs and organizations and 200+ campus activities are offered each year, including student traditions like Bed Races during Homecoming and Hiking to the M on Big Butte during Orientation.
  • • The Health, Physical Education and Recreation Complex offers 8,000 square feet of fitness space including a six-lane 25-meter pool, a cardio and weight room, dance studio, and more.
  • • There are three residence halls to choose from. The Student Success Center includes a residence hall, student services, advising, tutoring, an eatery—and terrific mountain and stadium views.

Campus Orientation

Orientation takes place a few days before courses begin for the fall and spring semester. Admitted students will receive additional information about the orientation dates and final details about how to complete their admissions file to be registered for classes. Typically, move-in and orientation in the fall starts the Wednesday before classes begin. Students starting in the fall will additionally receive invitations in the spring to attend one of the in-person or virtual Registration Rallies to get registered for classes.

Important Things To Know

  • • The Lance Scholars Program provides 50 new first-time and transfer students who are residents of Montana pursuing a bachelor’s degree and have a high school or transfer GPA of 3.0 or higher with a $4,000 per year scholarship, renewable for up to three additional years (up to $16,000 total). Qualifying admitted students will receive an invitation to apply on their student portal (PURL), applications are due by February 15, 2025. Learn more at mtech.edu/lancescholars.
